On the medical ward in the hospital, night time was the worst; she hated it. She couldn’t remember how many days she had been there but it seemed like a lifetime. Every night they gave her something to help her sleep, to make her sleep. She did not want to take it so she pretended to swallow the pill but hid it under her tongue. Then she would spit them out and try to hide it in the trash. The young nurses talked to her in a condescending manner as if she were a child and could not understand. She would lie awake in the dark worrying and listening to the other patients. Some called out in their sleep, some screamed. It reminded her of the assault that she could not forget.  She felt that the therapy was helping but it was a very slow process.  She remembered the turtle and lava and fire she had seen on the islands and felt burnt but regaining her strength.
