Always, it seemed to him a mystery, how many people were so reluctant to take decisive action against criminals. People were so naïve and optimistic, believing basically that human nature was good. They were unbelievably surprised when someone was intentionally cruel. They wondered what the world is coming to. Bewildered at the news of another murder, rape, child abuse, random acts of violence, or bombing, they would ask, why. They didn’t comprehend the world had always been this way. To him it was unbelievable that people who were otherwise reasonably intelligent could allow themselves to be so tied in knots by rules and “civilized” procedures. Trials would go on for months and sometimes years. Sophistry and guile consistently twisted the law beyond recognition of any justice. Confused and cynical juries often set the guilty free to repeat their crimes. He asked himself if we were more free because of our laws and justice system and the answer was a big, No. Less so. Each new law seemed to protect the criminal. He had learned that people, when the most sincerely spoken promise was made, in reality it would be broken if some more pressing reason came along in their lives. Yet among all the deceit of the system, one could mine for the few rough diamonds to be found with hard work and some luck.
